Family

We need to find ways to encourage families to stay together.  This can come from having better choices for training and employment in this region. We want to be able to live a healthy lifestyle. We can help ourselves by arranging for classes that reinforce the message - eat well, respect your body and reduce unhealthy actions (junk food, drugs, lack of exercise).

 

Culture

People strong in their culture can be proud and will achieve their goals. Nungaroo has done some very good work on recording the significant sites in the district. The work done by John Griffiths needs to be collected and recorded in an easily accessible format.

 

The Council needs to build on this collection to train younger men and women in the techniques of recording cultural history.

 

It is still envisaged the Community Centre will become the hub for preserving the culture.  A meeting place for Elders, a historical display that continues to grow, a place to teach, both formally and informally, somewhere for non-Indigenous people to come to learn about the Kamilaroi people.

 

The Cultural Centre would be where we work with other organisations such as Liverpool Plains Shire, training providers, mining and other employers and government agencies. Through agreements we may be able to attract support funding from government agencies such as DEEWR, OEC and DAHC who need to work with the Indigenous community.

 

Culture and history should be taught in the home. We need to encourage our younger members to help the senior community members to pass on the lore of our people.

 

Land

Most of the land assets are small blocks, generally suitable for housing of some type. There is a general willingness to realise the cash value of some blocks if the money can be used to provide more or better housing for members and their families. The assets need to be revalued to reflect the rise in house and land values in the town.

 

Honesty and Pride

These go together. The Council needs to work hard to repair the damage done to its reputation in the past. The CLBP is a tool that can be used to make sure that the systems are in place to operate efficiently and transparently.
